YouTube SEO in 2026: Titles, Descriptions and Tags That Rank

Last updated 18 September 2026

A practical YouTube SEO guide covering keyword research, high-CTR titles, descriptions, tags and chapters.

Search intent comes first

YouTube ranks videos that satisfy the viewer. Before choosing keywords, ask what someone typing that phrase actually wants — a tutorial, a comparison, a quick answer or entertainment.

Write titles for people, then for search

Put the main keyword near the start, keep titles under about 60 characters so they don't get cut off, and add a curiosity element or clear benefit. Avoid clickbait that the video doesn't deliver.

Descriptions that help discovery

The first two lines appear above the fold — restate the value and include your main keyword naturally. Follow with a 150–250 word summary, related keywords, links and chapters.

Tags and chapters

Tags play a minor role today but help with misspellings and related topics. Chapters (timestamps starting at 00:00) are more valuable: they can appear in search results as key moments and improve viewer navigation.
